Okeanis, one of the Oceanids, was the daughter of the mighty sea goddess Tethys and the earth-encircling river Okeanos/Oceanus. Okeanis is categorized as an Oceanid nymph, one of the 3,000 water nymphs known to reside in the ocean and saltwater. Sailors regularly paid homage to the Oceanids by dedicating prayers, libations, and sacrifices to them for protection from maritime dangers. The Oceanids were born to Okeanos/Oceanus, the legendary earth-encircling, deep-flowing freshwater river, and Tethys, a powerful sea goddess. They had 3,000 brothers, the Potamoi, who symbolized the world’s major rivers. While some Oceanids like Doris and Amphitrite were clearly depicted as goddesses of the sea, others like Metis, who had no apparent connection to water, possessed prophetic abilities and wisdom. Zeus swallowed Metis to prevent her prediction of one of their children’s ascendency over him from coming to fruition, leading to the birth of the armored Goddess of Armed Resistance and Wisdom, Athene.
