“Pleias” is one of the “Pleiades” nymphs. They were the daughters of Pleione (an Oceanid) and Atlas. Pleione means "the one who increases in number " as she presided over the multiplication of the flocks. There still is scholarly debate about the exact origin of their name. It ostensibly derives from the name of their mother, Pleione, effectively meaning "daughters of Pleione". However, the name of the star-cluster likely came first, and Pleione was invented to explain it. According to another suggestion Pleiades derives from πλεῖν (plein , "to sail") because of the cluster's importance in delimiting the sailing season in the Mediterranean Sea: "the season of navigation began with their heliacal rising". After Atlas, their father  was forced by Zeus to carry the heavens on his shoulders eternally, Orion the great hunter, began to pursue all of the Pleiads. After 7 years of this hunt,  Zeus beckoned their mournful prayers transformed them first into doves, and then into stars, to comfort their father. The constellation of Orion is said to still pursue them across the night sky to this day. Together with the seven Hyades, they were called the Atlantides, Dodonides, or Nysiades, nursemaids and teachers to the  god (then infant) Dionysus.
