“Hesperis” is one of the “Hesperides” nymphs. The Hesperides were the nymphs of evening and sunsets. The name originates from Hesperos (evening). Hesperos, or Vesper in Latin, and is the origin of the name Hesperus, the evening star (i.e., the planet Venus), as well as having a shared root with the English word "west". They are sometimes called the Western Maidens, the Daughters of Evening or Erythrai, and the "Sunset Goddesses", designations all apparently tied to their imagined location in the distant west. Their mother Hesperius, is appropriately the personification of the evening (as Eos is of the dawn) and the god of the Evening Star is Hesperus, who is the father of Hesperius. The Hesperides were entrusted with the care of the tree of the golden apples which was had been presented to the goddess Hera by Gaia (the Earth) on her wedding day. They have appeared in many well-known myths of ancient Greek mythology, such as the labors of Heracles (Hercules), Jason and the Argonauts, Perseus and Andromeda.
