“Alseis” is one of the nymphs called “Alseids”. In Greek mythology, Alseids (in Greek; Ἀλσηΐδες) were the nymphs of glens and groves. The meaning of their name is “the daughters of groves”, and it originates from the Greek word «άλσος», meaning small wood, grove, boscage, or copse. They are considered a very rare type of nymph, only seldomly encountered, both in person, as well as in written literature too. Not many references of them have been found so far, especially when compared to most other types of nymphs. Of the Classical writers, the first, and perhaps only poet to reference alseids, is the very well-known Homer (creator of some of the most well-known ancient Greek mythological tales in modern times, “Iliad” and “Odyssey”). But, rather than alseid, he used the spelling alsea. Homer refers to them three times, with descriptions such as “the nymphs who live in the lovely groves”, “the nymphs who haunt the pleasant woods” and “the nymphs coming from Groves”. Alseids have also been featured multiple times in the very popular card game “Magic: The Gathering”.
