The history

CHIONATA

Its a village and province on the southeast part of the island. It is placed between the slope of Ainos and the shore of the Ionian sea at 203 meters altitude and 25 km away from the capital of the island ‘’Argostoli’’.

The population of the village is 63 and of the province 154. The province consists of the villages ‘’Kolaitis’’ and ‘’Thiramonas’’.
The whole village was completely destroyed during the large earthquake on June of 1953.

On the 15th of August every year there is a big local festival with celebrations for the church of the village which is dedicated to the ‘’Holy Virgin’’. Due to tradition, the locals cook meat and they offer it on a big table that is prepared for guests and tourists.

Two of them are only 3 km away, ‘’Kaminia’’ which is the place that the protected Mediterranean turtle species ‘’Caretta-Caretta’’ lays its eggs, and ‘’Katelios’’ famous for the taverns that serve fresh fish.
